On watering, this year has been very dry so the water butts have been dry. I just top them up with tapwater and all seems well.
At the moment the water butt system is decomissioned because I am having the lads in to put paving over the whole garden (that way I can sneak in more greenhouses). The whole are will also be securely fenced at the same time and a new larger propogation shed sneaked in.
I will then set up the water system again, basically it is a series of water butts, three at the moment but it could be more. All of these are piped with 1.5 inch waste piping and tank connectors on the butts. At the end is a cheap pond pump with a hose attached which I use to water the plants. Because this is out of action at the moment it is a watering can filled from the tap it takes a couple of hours to water 1500 plants so anything else is a none starter. The plants seem fine on tap water and if anything they are growing better, could be the hot sun though that has done that.

Re: Flowering and a water question
If you have the space, build a pond it attracts wildlife, and you can use the water for your cacti when water butts run dry..

Blimey Karen, you must have some pond to get ducklings!! Lucky you!
I have a small pond (one of those moulded ones) to put in, hopefully although small it should attrack at least a few amphibians and insects!!

It's not very fair on the pondlife if they get all their water taken away in summer or, worse, poured onto a cactus!

Well we have a pond in our garden and a stream running through the farm and the pond has had to be filled several times as that is drying out and as for the stream, you couldn't even wet your toes in it.
But back to tap water if it's good enough for Roy and Bob et al, it's good enough for me, save pumping the wells LOL

Hi, i`ve just introduced myself on here, but can you please give me the name of the Cacti behind the Gymnocalycium in bloom?
It`s a Cacti i own, but i`m stuck on it`s name, and would like to finally put a label to it. I assume, probably wrongly, but is it a Gymnocalycium too? Please help me. Thanks

Re: Flowering and a water question
Hello Sheffield surfer, and welcome. Andrew H may know better but it looks like a Gymnocalycium denudatum or a Gymnocalycium horstii to me.

Thank you. I hate owning a plant and not knowing it`s name. Then again, too many of my collection are nameless. Lol.
