1st edition Reynolds The Aloes of South Africa - anyone got one?

Post by Paul in Essex »

Asking a favour. There is a colour plate in the first edition, apparently, showing a red flowered Aloe striatula. If anyone has it could they please take a photo of the page and post it here (or pm me or email it to me)

Muchas gracias.

The 1970 edition has a separate plate with A. striatula, but in black and white. I would be surprised, if previous editions had different plates in colour, but you never know.

I messaged Colin a while back but no reply as yet. Hopefully he will read this by way of a memory jog.

I'm told the first edition does carry a colour plate. I have a later one which doesn't.

I am still tracking down a 'mythical' red flowered form. According to Reynolds it exists - he names two locations where it is to be found - but no-one else has heard of it.

Surprising though it may seem, the first edition did have more plates in colour than the later editions.

My copy, probably not the first edition, sold for £5 on eBay. I think I paid about £25 for it ten years earlier buy I sold it as I didn't use it anymore. How large does Aloe Striatula need to be to flower? I've one up to about 80cms tall growing outside in full sun. It remained solitary so I planted two more small ones next to it. This year it's just started to cluster but no sign of buds. Hyde Hall in Essex has some superb clumps of A.Striatula in their 'dry garden', well worth a visit if anywhere near Essex.

Keith, thank you! It really is rather red, isn't it!! Makes me want it even more!

Stuart, sounds like it should be flowering any time now. Often it flowers precociously if grown from a cutting that was about to shoot. And, yes, those at Hyde Hall are magnificent.

I was given some cuttings a few years ago, and planted them out in the garden on a sunny slope. This is the first year they have flowered (several separate plants), and are probably no taller than yours. Perhaps it just takes them a while to get established.
