I'm with Mat - the Black Death is a serious issue with this species for me.

Yes, “Black Death” seems to be a problem with this species. I have a couple of plants with ‘normal’ spination, that seem to suffer from the black fungus, but it’s never fatal, just unsightly. This particular plant has never suffered so far (
), so maybe certain clones are more susceptible.
Lovely flower, Tony! Much better photo than mine, too.

I've been spraying mine with Rose Clear fungicide ever since a total plant collapse some years ago. I don't know if it works as the key factor but so far so good and the two salvaged balls now have balls of their own.
