Stapelia in Flower

Post by saddlestoneman »

Hello All

Warm weather is promised in the UK for the next few days, so I decided to water my succulents. In one corner of the greenhouse I detected a bad smell and here's the culprit.

I bought it at a car boot sale a couple of years ago, and it's the first time it's flowered. I think it's a Stapelia Variegata. The plant probably needs a re-pot to raise it above the rim of the pot.

best regards ... Stef

I have a cutting which I was given last year of something which looks very similar. It resides in the conservatory. I'll move it. I don't want the dog being blamed for something which would be down to me!
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Now known as Orbea variegata, and yes, they do stink a bit!

Super flower, even if smelly. Once you have had this in flower, it's easy to get lured into getting more stapeliads.

That's a great plant, and another one behind it.

A single flower on such a large plant seems sparse - is that normal for the species?

One flower is enough for me ...

These were BCSS seeds from 3 or 4 years ago.

There’s now a seed pod on this plant, although it hasn’t changed over the last few months. What’s the process?

Thanks

It will grow to a certain size then dry out and explode into a football shaped mass of feathery seeds.

I you want to keep the seeds put a paper bag over the seed horns and secure at the base with an elastic band. They will all be caught then.
