Absolutely, most of the buds are formed on <1 yr old segments!Christian wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 2:05 pm Does this pruning practice encourage flowering? For the first time I pruned one of my two plants of these (cuttings originating from one plant) whilst leaving the other one unpruned. They are both next to each other in a cold frame. It looks as though the pruned plant is developing buds, whereas as the unpruned plant keeps sprawling about.

Re: Pterocactus tuberosus
I suspect the thinner stemmed plants may be more deciduous than than the thicker stemmed ones, but this is just a surmise not based on anything more than the stems seem to die more in my collection on the thinner stemmed plants.
After losing a couple by cooking the roots, I'm rather wary of trimming off the top growth, in case that's all I have left to save a plant!

Re: Pterocactus tuberosus
Variation on a theme - (nearly) all yellow flower parts. Came to me as Pterocactus tuberosus HUN1744. The thin stems are a brownish colour.
Varied collection of mostly cacti with some Agave and Aloes - space is always the problem!!
