Marco Cristini has been growing succulents, above all Crassulaceae, for more than 15 years. He is vice-president of the Italian Cactus and Succulent Society (AIAS), and editor of the journal Piante Grasse. He has written articles about succulents for Italian, English and German journals. He is mostly interested in the Crassulaceae family and has just finished a monograph on the genus Aeonium, which will be published this Autumn as a special issue of Piante Grasse. Apart from succulents, he has a PhD in Classics (History of Late Antiquity) and now works at the University of Tübingen (Germany).

In his talk, Marco will focus on the genus Adromischus, offering some advice on how to successfully grow these succulents. Moreover, he will show us the most beautiful species, which can become veritable succulent jewels if cultivated well. This promises to be a fascinating talk.

Graham Charles, the BCSS President, joined the then National Cactus and Succulent Society 60 years ago at the age of 12 and he has enthusiastically pursued the hobby since then, especially the study of South American cacti. During his 10 visits to Peru, matucanas became a particular interest and, with his travelling companions, a number of new distinct species were found and described. The most recent have just been published in the June edition of CactusWorld.

In this talk, Graham will tell us about the history of the genus, the characteristics of the species and where they grow. He will introduce us to the best species to cultivate and tell us how to grow them. You will see some of the dramatic habitats where matucanas can be seen growing in nature.

Melanie first became interested in Aeonium back in the 1980’s when she was a young State Registered Nurse working full time in a hospital in Lymington in the New Forest. However, nursing was not her biggest passion, Melanie’s heart belonged to plants, and her connection with plants has always been her true succulent passion. Melanie’s first Aeonium fascinated her as it looked nothing like anything she had seen before. This resulted in a quest to find more information and it has become a botanical adventure of discovery! Melanie says that she feels fortunate these days in being able to dedicate her life to these plants and her national collection. She enjoys the opportunity to educate people on these wonderful plants, including her recent appearance on BBC Gardeners World. Melanie is passionate on educating people on the plight of this wonderful genus!

In what promises to be an exciting and fascinating talk, Melanie will help us explore the roots of Aeoniums, and their habitat. She will explain her deep concerns for the genus in the wild, and finally she will allow us to take a peep at modern cultivars and where they are heading.

Jackson Burkholder has been growing cacti and succulents for over twenty years. He grew up attending Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society events, and what started as one or two small plants every year has turned into an obsession with desert flora. Since then, he has been Vice President of the Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society and is currently serving on the board of directors for the Cactus and Succulent Society of America.

Jackson recently graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Horticulture and minors in Botany and Japanese. He is currently starting up Precision Cactus Growers, a nursery which will specialise in producing cactus seeds and plants with collection and location data. His plants are distributed between a small greenhouse and multiple cold frames where his current focus is on South American cacti that thrive in the high elevation and cool nights of Colorado.

He is currently working on finishing his master’s thesis at Texas State University on the subject of the ‘anatomy of cactus extrafloral nectaries’. He has many additional research projects coming up and is also working on a book about cactus biology and cultivation directed towards the hobbyist audience.

In this talk presentation Jackson will start by introducing the taxonomy and biology of the genus Sulcorebutia, a group of miniature alpine cacti that has more recently been included in Rebutia and Weingartia. He will summarise some of the special care that these plants require to do well and put on large flowering displays. Finally, he will conclude with a "virtual tour of Bolivia", a slide show of plants from his collection grouped by locality to reflect which species can be seen in vicinity of one another in nature.

Ernst van Jaarsveld was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1953 and he attended Linden High School. Ernst successfully achieved a National Diploma in Horticulture in 1975. He was at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden from 1974 until 2015. He has been working at Babylonstoren Farm since 2015. Ernst is well known for his expertise in southern African succulents and drought adapted plants. The RHS has awarded its Veitch Memorial Medal to Ernst van Jaarsveld in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of the science and practice of horticulture.

While working at Babylonstoren Farm Ernst has been involved with many succulent related projects. He has also taken part in many botanical explorations. In this fascinating talk he will focus on the garden and on his work there. He will also take us through two exciting expeditions: Southwest Angola and the Fish River rubber canoe expedition.

David Ilett has been growing cacti and succulents since he was a teenager, and although levels of time/interest have varied over the years he has always kept growing a selection of plants. Some have survived through thick and thin, and (many) others have fallen by the wayside. He joined the NCSS the year before it merged and became the BCSS. His interest took off strongly again when his youngest son got interested (for a while) and it currently shows no signs of letting up. He currently runs the BCSS YouTube channel (all/any contributions welcome! (emails to YouTube@BCSS.org )).

This talk will be live from his greenhouses and will cover various aspects of succulent plant cultivation based on his growing experiences over the past 40ish years, from windowsills to greenhouse. David will cover his approach ranging from the basics to more advanced techniques, including repotting, watering, feeding, pests etc. The suggestion for this talk came from the BCSS Talks Audience and it promises to be an interesting and informative evening.
