Re: Madeira - Jardim Botanico
This view of the rest of what might be B. brasiliensis is a bit arty, but it's the only other view I took, so it's not brilliant for an ID.

Re: Madeira - Jardim Botanico
A general view of the garden. Not very keen on the chequered "carpet bedding" myself, but there is an aloe in the foreground.

Re: Madeira - Jardim Botanico
Me again, this time with a Dragon Tree, Dracaena draco. This is widely grown on the island, but also occurs naturally.

Re: Madeira - Jardim Botanico
Aeoniums used here as bedding plants! Not too sure I like this rather formal arrangement myself, but each to his/her own!

Re: Madeira - Santa Catarina
Two more dragons guarding the gateway to another small garden, the Santa Catarina Municipal Garden in the centre of the city of Funchal. These venerable specimens must be a very good age.

Re: Madeira - Hylocereus
Here's what I think is Hylocereus undatus on a wall of another public garden. Lots of buds and a few dead flowers, but when we were there unfortunately no open flowers.

Re: Madeira - Ceiba
This is the base of the largest specimen of Ceiba insignis (aka Chorisia speciosa) that I've ever seen. This tropical plant from Brazil and Argentina is commonly grown in frost-free gardens in the tropics, but I've never seen it before with such a swollen base. Anyone know if this swelling is natural for this species or not?
This belongs to the family Bombacaceae, so it's a relative of the baobab, Adansonia digitata.
It has spectacular flowers a bit like those of Alstromeria (not though related to it), but this plant wasn't in flower.
