As a chemist, (tu) for Ed re. sulfur not sulphur.
IUPAC deemed that sulfur was the preferred spelling many years ago now, see e.g.:

I'm sorry (or not) that my "Just FYI" post provoked so much discussion; and yes, sulfur is the most commonly used element in my greenhouses apart from aluminum!

Chuckle!
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

I did hear on a past radio programme that American spellings were often closer to their original roots than ours are, but its all Greek to me! However language scholars will spend a lot of time debating it and you thought your discussion was getting involved?

I just use UK nomenclature and let the purists debate it.

Ah yes ... our cousins on the other side of the pond, who, according to a statesman of high renown, "British and Americans are two people separated by a common language"

Evidently the confusion about the spelling of aluminum/aluminium was caused by its discover who first named it aluminum but later changed it to aluminium. The Americans using his original spelling and the British using his later one.
