It does prefer a wide bowl rather than a narrower pot, doesn't it?

Certainly does. I struggled with it in an ordinary pot but once I switched it to a pan it was much happier.

Perhaps that's because of its tendency to send out underground runners?

I think that's right, Ralph. In a pot the shoots go round and round the inside of the pot, or attempt to get out of the drainage holes.
