I also have some lovely variegated VR cultivars from Tina, they are great and will be amazing when bigger but do grow slowly. I have some other variegated agaves, which are also spectacularly beautiful in my opinion but grow quicker

You would have more pocket money but with less eye candy, I do love my agaves & they are very decorative.
That's really good colour on the rum runner

The picture's labelled lophantha celsii so I think it is a cross of those species.

Looks like Dave has two crosses detailed on his website,

Lophantha x celsii parents.

The resulting plant is the odd one out of the batch. Most of its siblings have the 'hybrid vigour'.

This add to the debate on seed sowing methods. Some folk prefer to so a few seeds in a small pot and let them grow on a bit before potting individually. Others prefer one seed per cell. My preference is one seed per cell because the smaller ones are crowded out by the bigger bullies and fade away.

Regards
Dave.

New member here! I just posted an introduction (https://forum.bcss.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... 00#p335900), and mentioned I had a A v-r 'white rhino' with some pups. So I thought I'd post it here. I had to wait a bit before my account was activated, and, being an Agave-fan, I actually went through all pages in this thread  . I don't have many variegated agaves, but I do have some agave, mostly grown from seed, mostly still small.

Here's my 'mother-plant' just after I received it in July 2021
Image

July 2021, not long after being potted (and after a generous watering!)
Image

September 2022, you actually can already see the first pup, around 7-8 o'clock.
Image

July 2023, not that much bigger than September 2022. The plant had a fungal infection in one leaf last winter. I treated it with some sulfur powder, and it seemed to have contained it. You can see 2 pups now.
Image

One of the pups a bit clearer.
Image

What is actually a good time to remove pups? At the end of the growing seeing, at the start, or when they're dormant?

Hi & Welcome,
Your not that far from me, odd that its a stoloniferous pup as mine are normally firmly attached to the plant body it will make independence easier.

Leave until next year when its bigger and wait until summer & its growing well, can always cut the 'join' & leave in the pot , it will root quicker as its had less disturbance. As its a stolon pup I imagine it will be rooting early

Thanks Tina, I'll leave them attached until next year. Hadn't thought about leaving them in the pot after removing them, but that makes sense too, good tip, thanks.
