Astrophytum asterias 'superkabuto v-type'
Just thought I'd share this astro I recently purchased! Will definitely be using in future breeding projects.

Rather nice, I expect it had quite a long journey to get here. It looks to be growing in pumice in a clear pot?

Yes pumice, volcanic rock, clay and calcium carbonate. I just prefer the plastic pots, they are cheap, the perfect size and can be re used, it's also easier to spot root pests that way.

Nice plant Henry. there are many forms of v-type but that plant is a nice open type.
I thought my Mexican dry mix was frugal but you are down to hydroponics

Transparent (or translucent) pots do not work in practice. You will get algal growth on the inner surface.

They have worked well for me, algae has never been an issue. Even if it was, I really wouldn't mind.

The Dutch grow orchids in clear pots and they wouldn't do it without a good reason. They make good houseplants and I've usually brought one or two back from Dutch trips, they keep flowering each year with very little care and no sign of any algae. On the other hand, the Dutch grow Kalanchoes in 'thermoforce' plastic pots which are terracotta on the outside and black on the inside to keep the light out, again, they're doing it for a reason.

Yes, much of the reason I bought this one is how unusual it is for a V type to have such a 'clean' look to it.RAYWOODBRIDGE wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 12:34 pm Nice plant Henry. there are many forms of v-type but that plant is a nice open type.
