This was rescued from an old lady who had it on her kitchen windowsill for a good few years. Where you can see the deformed part of it about 3/4 way up, there were artificial flowers glued on. At one time that would have been the top of the plant I guess. It is doing well now but I am fascinated by the long, fairly stiff hairs around the base.

I agree. I think the correct spelling is Thrixanthocereus (note the 'h') but there are many entries on Google under both spellings, so plenty to choose from. The hairs are only supposed to be on young plants but yours looks quite old. Perhaps they are applying the same interpretation of 'young' as I apply to myself!
