To prune Pterocactus tuberosus or not has been mentioned on this sub forum before.
Well these four guys had no chop, they are au natural.

Looks good to me. I suspect the big deep pots let the roots get big enough to have enough reserve to keep the tops alive.

In my hands, I'm sure they would fall apart - I only have to look at the narrow-stemmed tuberosus/kunzei/decipiens and they break up.

Thanks Tony and Ralph yes the deep pots help, but to be honest just keeping them well watered seems to help, two other plants gave themselves the chop, so are now small plants again but look like they will flower in a couple of weeks time. Pterocactus are a law unto themselves , and I think they are now thought to be outside the Opuntia family like Maihuenia.
