I keep mine in my office in work, where it is rarely below 20C (computers running all day and night), and water it once a month or so in winter.
This is after losing the one in my greenhouse - but which did flower for me before it expired.

Re: Pterocactus australis
My Pterocactus tuberosus flowered one year, and I almost missed it - the flowers were dark brown - exactly the same colour as the stems...

I can see my "recognition" counts for nothing!
Ho hum. I bet your greenhouse is pretty empty - recognising only a few species in each genus, eh!?
You'll be lumping Stapelia into Pachypodium next, or something, I can tell!
(Not entirely seriously)

Dear All > Looks like bog-standard A. variegata to moi. I must say I am not too convinced by the picture at the top of this thread. But try looking at this picture: http://www.palkowitschia.cz/sukulenty/Galerie/sukulenty/slides/Aloe%20ausana.html This one looks a bit different (somewhat between &quo...

Re: Aloe ausana
Aloenut > I was wondering if you knew of a formal description of A ausana or how the name originated? IPNI (International Plant Names Index) is the place to go to find where plants were first described. http://www.ipni.org/index.html It reports: Aloe ausana Dinter & Dinter -- Repert. Spec. Nov. ...

Re: Withholding water to stop flower buds from aborting
As far as I am concerned, early watering does NOT seem to be a problem for Rebutias, Lobivias, Sulcos, etc. The only genus where I suspect it may make a difference is Echinocereus: I have heard that if you water these too early, you may get more offsets than flowers. In the lasy couple of years, I h...

Re: A tale of two people
A couple of rules I use when buying off eBay are - make sure the seller says the plant you are getting is the one in the photo: I have seen some places show pics of say a 10cm specimen Ariocarpus while the small print says you will get a 1cm seedling of this species. - make sure the photo is clear, ...

Re: Aloe ausana
Most books reduce A ausana to A variegata these days. I have seen plants labelled A ausana which look a bit different to A variegata. The leaves tend to be shorter and perhaps broader , and held more horizontal, and the body to be a bit darker green then A variegata as normally encountered. The flow...
