Re: Thinking of getting a greenhouse or cold frame. Advice needed please
Largely agreed, but a heater and thermostat can cost relative peanuts - mine cost very litttle, although I did build the thermostats. There is also the fact that @Trevk21 is looking to house an exisiting collection rather than looking to extend the collection by sticking with hardy species. If the t...

Re: Thinking of getting a greenhouse or cold frame. Advice needed please
The other thing to bear in mind is that a few succulents do better out of full sun - in my experience Gasteria and Sansevieria do better in very light shade than they do in full sun,for instance. The same goes for some of the bulbs grown by C&S enthusiasts. I've not come across any cacti that I ...

Re: Thinking of getting a greenhouse or cold frame. Advice needed please
Heating to around 5C just means that very, very few cacti, though far more succulents, can't be kept outdoors. 10C would cost a fortune but enable virtually any C&S to get by outdoors. Seed-raising generally, really requires something like 20C, or above for some species - lots of exceptions thou...

Re: Death to Mealy Bugs
Most pesticides these days also have limits on how many times they can be applied in a growing season - e.g. 3 or 4, which also makes using sufficient repeat applications to ensure all bugs are killed off pretty tricky. I have never noticed any instructions stating such, and if I had, on purely orn...

Re: Who ate my flower?
It doesn't look like snail damage as there looks to be only whole petals removed, no grazing is obvious.
What is more likely????? Pass. I can think of lots of unlikely culprits, but no likely ones.

Re: Root Grow
I even saw them trying to 'sell me some' with my privet hedge. Based on the plus and minus experiments by my friend, it would have been beneficial. Depending on soil, weather and much else, hedging can be awkward to get going, even privet, although a professional can't go round nursing things along...

Re: Root Grow
A friend is a landscape gardener and he tried it in the early days of availability for woody plants and it saved him money by using it.

Decide what you want to or could spend, that will go a long way to making the decision for you. Buy second-hand - if you are patient, you may get one free as many people move house and gain a greenhouse that they do not want, so offer them free to anyone who will dismantle and remove. Coldframes are...

Re: Death to Mealy Bugs
I have always assumed that re-treatment every 4-5-6 days for a couple of weeks was essential. That said, I have been extremely fortunate in that I have never had mealy infestations, just RSM. The very rare bought-in plant with mealies was easily dealt with. If you read Wiki for the chemical, resista...

Re: Death to Mealy Bugs
Significant persistance of any plant/crop treatment chemical, even ones with remakably well-targeted effects such as flupyradifurone, are unlikely to be got through licencing at all easily. No matter the claim, flupyradifurone, is used on food crops and if it persisted for long periods, it would be ...
