I'm not usually an optimist- I don't know what came over me. The flip side of the argument is that if common pests are difficult to control then how are new pests that are a biosecurity risk going to be controlled? It's more of a stem succulent than a caudiciform. If you want to remove an offset to root, go for it.
They are "winter growers", so most active in spring and autumn in UK conditions.

It looks like someone confused "leek cultivation" with "Lophophora cultivation" at some stage in their past.
