I have always grown my plants in the same soil. I just vary the amount of drainage, and the amount/depth of gravel at the neck. I can and do use the loam from the ground as explained, but that doesn't solve the drainage problem. For the record I grow fairly common cacti, some aloes, some lithops, so...

Finding the right potting mix

When I lived in the UK, I used Arthur Bowers and river sand in more or less equal quantities. Now that I live in North Cyprus it is impossible to get river sand (we don’t have rivers). Choice of potting mediums is limited. There is nothing loam based, everything is peat (and not always good quality)...
