Re: Black spheres of doom
For this it was 60% vermiculite, 20% coco coir, and 20% a combo of pumice, scoria, calcined clay and zeolite.

Black spheres of doom
I tried an experiment where I didn't heat-sterilize my soil before sowing some seeds and putting them into a ziploc. I relied on Physan 20 (2.5 ml / 32 oz boiled rain water) to treat seeds and soil. Two weeks later I have these little spheres of black mold/fungus?/whatever growing on the surface. An...

Re: Notocactus roseoluteus - germination
I have not had the best of luck with roseoluteus seeds. The first batch I sowed was from my own plant and I got zero germination. Another batch had decent germination but only about 3 seedlings survived. They seem a bit more finicky than other seeds I have had success with.

Re: ammonium sulphate?
In the last couple of years, I've been watering all my C&S with Ericaceous Miracle Grow. Mostly, they seem to be doing very well with it - although improvements could also be due to better lighting, ventilation etc too. Ralph, 2 questions: What's the difference between regular Miracle Grow and ...

Re: ammonium sulphate?
I do find plant nutrition a fascinating topic of study and a very difficult one at that. I have a strong suspicion that what we think we know is going to be wrong, and I don't mean you and me but science in general. ammonium based fertilizers are more rapidly converted into amino acids than nitrate...
