Chamaecereus crosses

Post by ralphrmartin »

I collected some seeds off my Chamaecereus 'Rugens Abendsonne" (other parent random), and got various seedlings up as result. The first two have now flowered. Nice enough, but no real wow factor...

To paraphrase - you've got to flower a lot of frogs before your prince blooms!

Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

The flowers from the plant on the left looks like the flowers on the named parent?

Yes, although the colours on the parent are more striking...

Brian Fearn said in his NCCPG book that he'd named 130 cultivars out of the 150 000 seedlings he'd raised to flowering size. Bob Schick named 129 Echinopsis cultivars having made over 1800 crosses and keeping up to 50 seedlings from each cross. Of the named chamaecereus crosses there are few that rightly have been named and an awful lot of unexceptional compost heap fodder. That said, I love crossing these plants but can't see me ever sharing any.
