Hi Ralph, sounds like a fantastic visit. Closer to home, if you have a visit to Scotland in your sights for next year we would love too see you in Edinburgh - I’ll be in touch,
Nick

A website of the conference is here: https://www.23h8.com/25182.html. Many interesting presentations, including the one by Ralph Martin on the Latin names of cacti and succulents. For those of you who can't wait to hear and see Ralph's really well elaborated and easy to understand talk at one of your local BCSS branch meetings: here is a picture of the speaker at the 2nd Chinese International Cactus and Succulent Conference.

And a video of the first day of the conference, including the plant exhibition and a visit of the Longhai C&S Botanical Garden, can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0pKMqcuyxw

Thanks, Detlev, and also thanks for bringing me up to date on a few of the finer points!

Detlev's talk on Cactus seeds in colour was fascinating...

Thank you Detlev! Now I want to read the "Naked thistle and spider cactus - The genus Gymnocalycium", what a fitting title!

That is just a translation of the German title "Nacktdistel und Spinnenkaktus - Die Gattung Gymnocalycium", using two German vernacular names. Mittler, when publishing the genus name Gymnocalycium (with the spelling Gymnocalicium) in 1844, introduced the German name "Nacktdistel". The German name "Spinnenkaktus" for Gymnocalycium denudatum was already mentioned by Schumann (1898) as ‘generally known’.

That's certainly an interesting detail, thank you for sharing. I suspected there might be some details "lost in translation", or perhaps left to the creative imagination of the translators.

Thanks, Detlev, a very interesting video - thanks for sharing.
I found time to watch it whilst eating lunch, now to go back outside to tend the plants and cut the grass!
