April 2024 - Bursting out of the pot

Thanking el48tel for the honour of winning the March 2024 Marvellous Mesembs photo competition.

I do like tuberous roots. The bigger the better (and that is mainly the reason I don't like grafting much...).
Let's go on to pictures of roots bursting out of their pots. Roots pooking through the holes on the bottom, roots that make square pots round, or even better, roots that literally break their pots and burst through the sides.

So for April 2024 I would like to introduce the topic of bursting out of the pot.

Let's add some examples of what I had in mind:

An Ariocarpus ripping open a pot from almost the top to the bottom:

A Gymnocalycium trying to do the same but not even halfway there:

A Pachypodium succulentum that will be hard to repot later this year if I try to save the pot it is in for another plant:

I am afraid I'm nowhere near, but just spotted this H. truncata 'Super Blue' (it's also nowhere near being blue...) in what used to be a square 5x5 cm pot. I'll leave it as is and see what happens over the next 20 days

A recent purchase for me… a very strangely growing turbinicarpus klinkerianus trying to push its way out of a 2 3/4 inch BEF pot.

A couple photographs from my recent visit to Paul's national collection of A., R. and W. (including S.!) near Aberdeen:

There were (just a few!) more, but I was staring at the plants for a couple of hours and almost forgot to take pictures...

Hopefully Paul will beat me with his own photographs

Now it is May, I can finally announce this month's winner.

I never knew Sulcorebutia's were capable of destroying a pot and I was impressed the pot got really thorn apart completely. So I award the winning golden medal to MatDz...!

Thanks Aiko! Maybe there weren't many contenders, but they were all very solid!

I really should pass the nomination to Paul whose plants are on those photographs. I will check this with him and one of us will propose a new subject promptly.

Found this plant when visiting a friend on Wednesday. Extremely impressive spination shown by the plants in his collection, but one day too late
