What's happening to this Gymnocalycium?

Post by el48tel »

This Gymnocalycium damsii rotundrum has a flower plus a strange side growth.
Any ideas as to what is happening?

Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

Dunno, but I’ve had similar on Gymnos. Aborted bud/offset?

Just had another closer look. It seems like four/five flower buds emanating from and hiding a 5mm diameter offset. I will keep this thread updated if the plant changes.

That is what has happened. I've had offsets flowering, but not as small as that and with so many flowers!

This behavior is not uncommon in Gymnocalycium ansitisii. Especially the plants known as G. anisitsii var. multiproliferum sprout very profusely and develop flowers already at young lateral shoots.
