Re: Winter hardy opuntias

I am thinking to grow them in wide pots. As a base large gravel, then finer gravel then 10cm soil ans 2-3 cm top gravel to protect root neck. As well I am planning to place small shed/hovel on november to protect them from outumn rains and remove it on march.

Winter hardy opuntias

I would like to hear any advise how to keep hardy opuntias like Fragilis and humifusa outdoors all the time, how to prepare soil, pots etc. Thank you for any tip.

Re: DIY greenhouse heatsink.

In place where I am from Heat pumps are pretty popular method of heating as it can get out 4 units of heat to one unit of electricity if we compare to electrical only heating which can get out 1:1. I have seen loads of perfect setups and loads of fails. Fails may include as pipework is not buried de...

Re: Seed Germination

It depends of species you sowed. Some like michanovichii, anisitsii, megatae, marsoneri and schickendantzii tekas bit more to germinate. I sowed about 800 packets this year. I divided them in half and germinated in different conditions. One half was in heated cupboard size room at 23-27C under grow ...

Re: Grumpy Gymnos

To me this looks like a combination of issues. First of all I suspect nutrient deficiency. second overwatering before rest period and third especcially on spegazzinii looks like frost damage to me. Gymnos like slightly acid soil as well. My advise is to repot them in soil with PH 5-5,5 let them reco...

Re: What is causing this? Solved

What about feeding? magnesium deficiency may cause old growth to become such colour. Try high nitrogen fertilizer and watch new growth. As well check calcium level in soil.

Re: Damping off?

Hydrogen peroxide is a good treatement. I use it even on germinated seedlings which are surrounded by such molt. I had only one case when seedling was burned by peroxide. But anyway it is still alive. Just do not spray directly to seedling but only around it. If you have no germination yet then no w...

Re: Has anybody tried something like this??

Definately this multigrafting is only temporary in case if you have multiple scions an only few grafting stocks. AnTTun what can you tell about using parafilm?

Thank you Ian for clarifying parafilm and grafting tape. So it will be another tool in case of need :).
