Re: Minack C & S Garden

It is truely inspirational stuff - really at the cutting edge of succulent planting in this copuntry. The planting there has been done by a guy named Neil Milligan, who lives in/runs a nursery called Tressider Farm not too far from the site. He is in the Plantfinder, I believe, and has most of the p...

Re: Winter time...?

Yes, open to the elements. With a rain shelter you can probably quadruple the number of plants that I am successful with here, but the topography, or even the scale, doesn't easily lend itself to such here. This is where the low rainfall certainly helps.

Re: Winter time...?

Hi Iann Fascinating subject this. I have tried many of the plants you list, mainly without a great deal of success. Not tried any mammilarias, so there is room for trialling there. Gymno. bruchii - tried and failed. I have some others doing well - gibbosum ssp nigrum been outside for 7 winters. Echi...

Re: Winter time...?

Iann - any chance you can be a little more specific here? Your saying 'some' or 'most' etc. is intriguing. Is this from personal experience or from something you have read? I have tried a lot of these but failed - but with specific names maybe I should be able try again? I have lost several species ...

Ok then - does any one know of a source of any old santa-rita? ;^)

Or is anyone interested in trading?

Cheers

Re: Garden predator

What a little cutie! We don't get hedgehogs here, which is a shame.

How long did it take to de-flea yourself afterwards?!

Re: hardy agaves?

Chris - No one nursery in particular. Largely, in the past, I have grown from seed, but that isn't exactly an instant fix. After that I just trawled through the nurseries in the cactus mall every now and then to see what was being offered. Also visiting cactus/succulent nurseries and BCSS shows. The...

Re: hardy agaves?

One of the big problems for recommending species for outdoors is that there is huge clonal variation. Many agaves, especially those grown more widely, have a very diverse geographical distribution and the provenance can make all the difference. For example some americana are bullet-proof down to -8C...
