I’ve always been put off gymnos by those horrible coloured monstrosities you see grafted on hylocereus. I also think mihanovichii is pretty ugly. A few Gymnocalycium plants and you have a full season of flower interest.
As for "dark smudges", under UV light, they glow in shades of red. (Sorry to be scientifically boring). In IR light .... more interesting still .....

If you process your images before posting you'll find that resizing is part of the file saving routine together with the choices of file type and file quality.

I'd be more than interested in knowing the outcome of your inspection. Last year I lost a large number of my smaller Haworthia. Not all and not necessarily neighbouring plants and not neighbouring other succulents. It was root mealie for some.
